Mindfulness in Education:

In 1967, the average age of onset of major depression was 31-33 years of age. Over a 30 year period, the average age has slipped down to 13-15 years of age, starting now as young as 4 years old.

There is clearly a need to support young people early on.

Mindfulness can support a sense of well-being and give children essential skills and states to navigate skilfully through adolescence and adulthood. See Sandrine’s recent article in QA Education magazine: Read

Paws b is a six to twelve session mindfulness course taught to 7-11 years old. It is taught with striking visuals, film clips and activities that bring mindfulness to life without losing the expertise and integrity of classic mindfulness teaching.

This course was designed by experienced classroom teachers and Sarah Silverton, a senior mindfulness teacher and trainer with the Centre for Mindfulness Research and Practice at Bangor University. It is adapted from the .b mindfulness curriculum for secondary schools, as well as influenced by adult mindfulness courses such as MBSR, MBCT and .b Foundations.

Who can teach Paws b?

Paws b has to be taught by teachers who themselves practise mindfulness regularly. Certified teachers have participated in an adult 8 week mindfulness course such as MBCT, MBSR or .b Foundations, followed by 6 months of developing a minimum daily practice of at least 20 mins. They already have some experience of working with 7-11 year olds, and have completed the Paws b Certification Course.

“People who are teaching these mindfulness methods need to be grounded in them themselves, they need to have a practice, because that is the fundamental bedrock of their understanding”. Dr Richard Davidson

Sandrine is a certified Paws B teacher, she completed her training with MISP (Mindfulness in Schools Project). Sandrine runs regular Paws B courses for pupils and evidenced-based courses (MBSR, MBCT-L, Finding Peace in a Frantic World) for teachers in Primary Schools, in West Sussex, Surrey and Hampshire.

“I so so enjoyed the MBSR Course.  I have brought morning practise back into my life and really have gotten more in touch with my needs during the day to help support myself in being the best Teacher I can be.  The Course was very informative and something I looked forward to each week through this term.  The weekly diaries and different practises have absolutely brought clarity and helped carry me through some difficult decisions, thank you.” Samanta, School Teacher.

Lady Cowdray funds lessons in mindfulness for children

Children at Easebourne Primary School have been learning about mindfulness this term thanks to the generosity of Lady Cowdray.

Year-three pupils have been working with Sandrine Cranswick of Mindfulness Midhurst each week, while children in Years four, five and six have continued their two to three weekly sessions of mindfulness with their class teachers.

Pupil Alex Manning, from Rabbits Year 3 H class said: “We’ve learnt so much already; how our mind can wander off, but we can start to bring it back.  Sandrine, our PAWS b trainer, explained that training our mind is like training a puppy – we need to be firm, kind and really patient!

Focusing on our breath helps and lots of us feel calmer and happier afterwards.”

Headteacher Johnny Culley introduced PAWS b, a Mindfulness Curriculum provided by the Mindfulness in Schools Project, for all children in Key Stage two, two years ago.  Mr Culley said: “At its most basic level, mindfulness helps the children to be more aware of what is actually happening, rather than worrying about what has happened or might happen.”

“Our Year 3 children, who missed six months of school during Lockdown, need this training more than ever and we are very grateful to Lady Cowdray for funding it.”

Lady Cowdray: “We all need to look after our mental health and well-being, now more than ever, and we are delighted to be able to continue to support this initiative at Easebourne Primary School, to ensure that the Year 3 children can benefit from the work that Mindfulness Midhurst does to support our children and young people, as Years four to six have done before them.”
